Air pollution and climate change are two major environmental challenges that are?closely tied to air pollutant emissions from energy production and consumption. Both?have significant impacts on human, environment, and the entire Earth system. Air?pollution has become the world’s largest single environmental health risk, responsible for?7 million people deaths per year worldwide. 3-D air quality models provide powerful?tools to simulate the sources, fates, and environmental impacts of air pollutants and to?support the development of integrated emission control strategies for air quality?improvement, climate change mitigation, and human health protection. Air quality and?climate modeling research at North Carolina State University (NCSU) spans from urban?air pollution to regional/global climate changes. This seminar will highlight major?research activities and recent progress for atmospheric modeling regional/urban air?pollution and associated health impacts at NCSU. The results from several state-of-thescience online-coupled meteorology and chemistry models will be used to demonstrate?the capability of the current generation of the air quality models. Future research?opportunities and directions will also be discussed.
